Social Programme

The Social Programme of EFMC-ISMC 2020 will include the following events:

  • Welcome Reception on Sunday, September 6
    Venue: Congress Center Basel
    Participation in the welcome reception is free of charge, but subject to prior registration (during your on-line registration).

  • Concert on Tuesday, September 8
    Venue: to be confirmed
    Participation in the Concert is free of charge, but subject to prior registration (during your on-line registration).
  • Excursions on Wednesday, September 9
    Optional excursions will take place during the afternoon of September 9 (as from 15:45). Excursions are subject to prior registration and payment (during your on-line registration). Further information on the proposed excursions is available below. All excursions will take place at the same time, so only 1 excursion per person can be booked.

  • Symposium Banquet on Wednesday, September 9
    Venue: to be confirmed

    The participation to the Banquet is optional, and requires prior registration as well as a contribution of 70,00€ per participant. Please register for the banquet during your on-line registration. Persons willing to attend the Banquet, but who are not registered for the symposium either as scientific delegate or as accompanying person, will be charged a fee of 150,00€.

Excursions

Excursions require a minimum number of participants to register. If the required minimum is not met, the excursion will be cancelled and we will refund the excursion amount. All the excursions will be on Wednesday, September 9, starting between 15:30 and 16:00.

EXCURSION 1: Guided Tour through the old town of Basel “Stories of Basel’s old town”

This traditional tour offers visitors and locals alike a close-up view of Basel. We will guide you through narrow alleyways and secluded squares, past impressive buildings and lively and vivid cityscapes, experiencing what has shaped the city and given it its unique character.

EXCURSION 2: City Treasure Hunt

If you want to discover the concealed treasures, peculiarities and other hidden nooks and crannies of Basel from a slightly different perspective, the city treasure hunt is the ideal activity for you. On our treasure hunt you will have the opportunity to explore Basel under your own steam, but with a little guidance. 

Divided in small groups you will be solving different task during approx. 3 hours and discover the city on your own. All participants meet at the end at the Teufelhof for an aperitif.

EXCURSION 3: Chocolate tasting Workshop 

From the cocoa bean through processing to finishing, learn all about the cocoa process and the history of Swiss chocolate. During the workshop you can also sample raw and roasted cocoa beans and different cocoa creations. From the delicious 100% Grand Cru Truffe to the flavoured matcha chocolate bar, discover a variety of local creations from traditional chocolatiers and innovative newcomers.

EXCURSION 4: Läckerli Workshop

The Basler Läckerli is a hard spice biscuit and one of the best known specialities of the city. It is made of honey, hazelnuts, almonds, candied peel, and Kirsch. At the hotel Teufelhof groups learn under expert supervision how to make these delicious treats themselves.

EXCURSION 5: Modern Architecture – The changing face of Dreispitz

One of the most interesting topics in modern urban design is without a doubt the spatial planning of urban districts. Basel is noted for its modern architecture and boasts impressive examples of how industrial sites can be developed into vibrant districts. For instance, the Dreispitz district where the city's bonded warehouse was formerly located is now home to a number of buildings by renowned architects. Design, art and creativity are tangible here.

Starting point is at “Rakete”, situated in the centre of Dreispitz district which is situated 20 min by tram from the Congress Centre.

EXCURSION 6: Private Guided Tour - Kunstmuseum

The main building of Kunstmuseum Basel, dating from 1936, was designed by Basel-based architect Rudolf Christ together with master builder Paul Bonatz from Stuttgart, both advocates of conservative modernism. Enjoy a private guided tour of the exhibitions and collection (excluding special exhibitions).

The museum is situated 15 min walking distance from the Congress Centre.
